‘The Jewel in the Crown’ to shine on Lankan TV

Following the immense success of South Korean serial drama, ‘The Jewel in the Palace’ which dubbed into Sinhala as ‘Sujatha Diyani’, National Rupavahini is to telecast another serial drama ‘The Jewel in the Crown’ as ‘Abhitha Diyaniya’ from Monday,11th February.

The serial dubbed under the able leadership of Athula Rasnsirilal, well-known disciple of late Titus Totawatte is to be telecast from Monday to Friday from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm on Rupavahini.

Loosely based on a folklore and originally titled Dae Jang Geum after its main heroine, the drama tells the tale of an orphaned royal kitchen cook in the ancient Joseon dynasty who went on to become the king’s first female doctor.
Set during 1683 -1724, the drama revolves round Dong Yi, is a bright and smart girl.

The show which was wildly popular in Korea with its lively characters and vivid depictions of traditional Korean cuisine and medicine had become a TV phenomenon in Asia and beyond, airing in some 60 nations including China, Japan, the Philippines and Iran and making an international star out of its main actress, Lee Young-Ae.

In Sri Lanka more than 200 hundred professional dubbing artists including some of the veterans in the field like Karunarathne Amarasinghe, Parakrama Perera, Seelarathne Senarath, Nimal Jayasingbe, Ulapane Gunasekara, Rohana Siriwardhane, Kamal Gamage, Milinda Perera, Geethananda Abeysundara, Mrs. Nayana Jayatilleke, Kusum Pieiris, Geetha Kanthi Jayakody, Melany Asoka, Kumari Perera, Ferny Roshani and Piumi Wijewardhane joined to make give a Sri Lankan touch to the Korean tele serial.

“The tele-serial has won multiple awards in Korea including MBC Drama Awards, 47th Baeksang Arts Awards and Korea Drama Festival in 2010.
