Members of the Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union (CEBU) have been provided a special credit card with discount privileges to reduce their cost of living.

The Bank-U–Privilege Card helps union members to purchase their daily needs of goods and services from a large number of commercial establishments throughout the country at attractive prices with discounts of upto 15-20 per cent.

Speaking at the launch of this simple plastic card in Colombo this week, Amarapala Gamage, CEBU President said the introduction of this card is unique as no other union in this country has ventured to bring such relief to its members.

CEBU is the only trade union representing employees of banks, and it has a membership of 29,000 belonging to 20 banks and financial institutions across the country.

He said that every member of the union would be able to enjoy the benefit of range of benefits under the card.

He said that they not only attempted to reduce the burdens of their members and win over their demands, but also wherever possible try to offer reliefs to the needy and marginalized. The union is offering one scholarship each for students in every district in the country for their higher education and these students are selected from needy families.

Mr Gamage told the Business Times on the sidelines of the launch that in a social welfare activity for the marginalized they have identified a land to construct a home for the aged in the Mullaitivu District to accommodate as many as 200 aged people and this would be finalized very soon.
