Police pugilist Sameera Karunaratne and MAS Southern’s B.N. Erandi came out on top at the 71st Layton Cup Boxing Meet concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium recently when they emerged the best boxer in the men’s and women’s category.

Karunaratne contesting in the Lightweight Under 60kgs bout prevailed against another top boxer N.S.P. Silva of Slimline who gave his opponent a torrid time before going down by points.

In contrast the women’s best boxer Erandi had little difficulty in overcoming her opponent S. Guneththi of Police who in fact was the best boxer in the same meet last year by 13-8 which ensured her the award.Slimline’s N.S.P. Silva and Kosala Nilmin of MAS Southern were adjudged the best losers in the men’ and women’s category.

Meanwhile in the men’s category Army came out on top when they bagged five gold medals from the ten bouts that were conducted with Slimline taking three gold’s and one each being won by being won by pugilists from the Air Force and Police.In the women’s category MAS Southern were winners all the way as they won six gold medals from the eight bouts that were conducted with Police and Army winning one each.

The Layton Cup meet was conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association with former secretary of the ABA retired DIG Ananda Gunatilleke being the chief guest at the closing ceremony.Results: Men – Light Flyweight Under 49 kg – W.A.C.I. Perera (Army) beat S.H.S.G. Kumara (Slimline). Flyweight Under 52 kg – P.D. Suresh Slimline) beat M.V.R.I.S. Bandara (Army Red).Bantamweight Under 56 kg – N.G.S. Jayaweera (Slimline) beat D.R. Wijeratne (Gandara). Lightweight Under 60 kg – M.P.S. Karunaratne (Police) beat N.S.P. Silva (Linea Clothing). Lightweight Under 64 kg – M.Y.. Dilshan (Air Force) beat A.G.S. Kumarasinghe (Navy). Under 69 kg A.P.G. Chandrakumara (Army) beat N.M. Hettiarachchi (Slimline). Middleweight Under 75 kg – M.A. Divaratne (Army) beat R.S. Navaratne (Slimline). Lightweight Under 81 kg – .P. Indika (Army) bet G.A.N. Fernando (Navy). Heavyweight Under 91 kg – G.A. Abeysinghe (Slimline) beat B.N.S. Sampath (Navy). Super Heavyweight Over 91 kg – A.R.B. Tillekeratne (Army) beat W.S. Eranga (Navy).

Bantamweight Under 54 kg – B.N. Erandi (MAS Southern) beat S. Guneththi (Police). Featherweight Under 57 kg – B.L.S. Sandareka (MAS Southern) beat M.P.K. Salgado (Army). Lightweight Under 60 kg – L. Udayangani (MAS Southern) beat A.K.R. Aluthgama (Navy). Light Welterweight Under 64 kg – J.V.P.C.K. Jayasekera (MAS Southern) beat S.C.S. Siriwardena (Navy). Middleweight under 75kg S. Weeraratne (Police) beat G.H.T.N. Dharmasena (MAS Southern). Super Heavyweight over 81 kg – T.M. Weerasinghe (Army) beat I.M. Rajapaksa ( Linea Clothing).
