CP Health Minister remanded on assault and abuse charges
The Health Minister of the Central Province was remanded yesterday for allegedly abusing the Provincial Health Director and allegedly assaulting a doctor.
Minister Kithsiri Amaratunga was produced before Kandy Acting Magistrate and Additional District Judge Augusta Fernando.
Provincial Health Director Dr. Shanthi Samarasinghe had lodged a complaint with the Kandy Police Headquarters Child & Women’s Unit that the minister has threatened and abused her.
The minister had also allegedly assaulted Dr. Sapumal Dhanapala who had lodged a complaint in the Minor Offences Branch of the Kandy Police and later got himself admitted to hospital.
The incident is said to have occurred in the Provincial Health Ministry office in Kandy. Mr. Amaratunga had allegedly accused Dr. Samarasinghe of not being present at Ministry meetings and not approving filling of vacancies and granting of promotions.
