A much-admired school principal in Minuwandeniya, the latest victim of a senseless killing was laid to rest on Thursday, as villagers lamented the loss of a good man who had worked tirelessly to raise the educational standards of the children in the area.

Tragic end: Anura Edirisinghe

Fifty two year-old Anura Edirisinghe had served as principal of the Yakkalamulla Minuwndeniya Junior School for 16 years when he was brutally slain. He also served in the Yakkalamulla Pradeshiya Sabha.

His wife, E. K. Saranalatha told the Sunday Times on the day of the tragedy, her son had nearly been run-over by a motorcyclist. This incident had developed into a heated argument and blows. According to her the son’s friends had told him that the best course of action would be to retaliate. But her husband had intervened and said they should lodge a police complaint and they had done so.

However, later on in the evening, apparently angered by the police complaint the other party had returned armed with poles, knives and swords and attacked her husband who sustained fatal injuries while she and her son were also beaten.

She also added that a three wheeler driver had refused to rush her husband to hospital in fear of being attacked himself.Subsequently, a 46 year-old woman and her two sons were taken into custody by a police team led by Galle SSP B. Gunawardebe, ASP K. B. Keerthirathne and HQI IP S. Senevirathne.
