Lyceum Wattala and Ave Maria Negombo take lead

Lyceum International Wattala and Ave Maria Convent Negombo are in the lead in the boys and girls categories according to unofficial results after the proceedings on day three of the 43rd Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championships at the Mahaweli Stadium in Embilipitiya.

Lyceum has so far collected 49 points and is being closely followed by Royal with 46 points and St. Benedict’s Kotahena are in third place with 44 points. In the girl’s category Ave Maria has taken a commanding lead with 54 points while Maliyadeva Balika Kurunegala are in second place with 45 points, followed by Ladies College in third place with 35 points.

Meanwhile the proceedings of the championships so far have been dominated by outstation schools. Two new records have been established field events.Both records broken were in the Shot Putt events for girl’s in the age group of under 14 and 15. In the under 14 category Jani Gayana de Silva of Ave Maria Negombo hurled a throw of 8.93m to better the record of 8.73m while W.S.M. Fernando of Lyceum International Wattala hurled a throw of 9.55m to eclipse the old record of 8.97m.

Jani and Fernando went on to achieve a double with both winning the Discuss throw events too. Three of the four 200m events were dominated by outstation athletes with Ananda Colombo’s Avindra Silva taking the Under 14 boys event.The Under 14 girls 200m event was won by Vinuri Liyanage of John Kotalawala College Kurunegala while the Under 15 events were won by (Girls) D.M.Y. Dulanjali of Ambagamuwa MV and (Boys) by Rashmika Shaman of Kuliyapitiya CC.� -MSA
