By Damith Wickremasekare

The 17 Chinese suspects allegedly involved in hacking into data bases of Chinese companies and defrauding over US $ 2 million, were tracked by monitoring high speed internet services users in the country, a senior official of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said.

The suspects who included six women were arrested on May 24 by the Cyber Crime Division of the CID within three days of receiving complaints from Chinese security authorities. According to the official, the suspects have been using seven mega bytes (7 MB) internet service for video calls and hacking into data bases.

The suspects were based in four houses in Malabe, Ragama and Aturugiriya, all acting as communication centres equipped with computers.

The Sri Lankan businessman identified as Prasanna Vitharanage who is married to a Chinese woman has assisted the suspects in numerous ways, including obtaining the houses for rent. Each house has been taken on rent at Rs.200, 000 for six months and rented to the Chinese for Rs.300, 000 for the same period.

While in Sri Lanka, the team has threatened a Chinese businessman to deposit a sum of US $ 32 million. A CID Lankan team has left for China to assist in the investigations.
