My best friend
By Dulain Bamunusinghe (8 years), Sussex College, Nugegoda

My best friend is Vinura Jayawardana. I call him ‘Loku Aiyya’. He is my next door neighbour. Loku Aiyya is in Grade 12 and I’m in Grade 4. He studies at St. Joseph’s College and he got 9A’s for his O/L exam.

I am like an ant when compared to him so my friends tease us as ‘Gulliver and Lilliput’. When we both have free time we go for swimming. We ride our bicycles together in the evening. I love to play computer games with him as he is an expert with them. Whenever I go on trips he waits impatiently for me. When I go to Loku Aiyya’s place he always prepares tea for me.

We have never fought with each other and we never will. I wish to be his friend forever!!!

The newspaper I like

By Lasini Wijegunawardena, (9 years), Lyceum Int. School

The newspaper I most enjoy reading is the Funday Times. The publisher of the Funday Times is Wijeya Newspaper Publications. I like the Funday Times for many reasons.

The subject areas I like the most are Maths and Science. Sometimes there are Language skills, Computer Studies, Art and big, beautiful pictures. Also there is news about sports tournaments. I most like the jokes in the paper and there are different kinds of activities such as puzzles and riddles. My mother likes to read the Cookery Corner very much.

It is a very useful newspaper. It has many items that we can learn from to improve our writing and reading skills. I like the Funday Times, it is the best newspaper.

Lion

By Ravindu Pathiraja (8 years), Sri Wijerama M.V., Udahamulla

The lion is a brave animal but it is scared of insects like mice, ants, cockroaches etc. The lion is carnivorous. The lion has four legs. Lions eat deer, hares, hippos and wild boar (That’s my favourite).

The lion is the King of the Forest. Lions have a yellow mane. In the deep sea there are sea-lions. Lions do not live in Sri Lanka. Lions have sharp teeth. In the Sri Lankan National Flag there is a lion with a sword.

I love lions.

Trip to Kukuleganga Holiday Resort

By Ashan Selvanayagam (Grade 5), S. Thomas’ Preparatory School, Colombo 3

Every year my parents take us on trips. This year we planned to go to Kukuleganga Holiday Resort. To surprise us, my parents had invited some of my friends also to join us.They joined up with us from Kottawa.

We reached the resort at around 4.30 p.m. When we reached the resort, it started to rain for a while. The next day was very sunny. After breakfast, we went to the swimming pool. Thereafter we went to see the Makeliya waterfall. It was a 15 minute drive from the resort.

In the evening we rode bikes as well as played cricket. The next day we went to see the Pahiyangala Rock Cave. It was situated on a mountain. It had 430 steps. It was used by the Veddahs and was discovered in 1968. It is 3750 years old.

We next went to a natural pool. The natural pool was situated 10km from the waterfall. The natural pool was like a river. It was my first time swimming in a river. The water current was strong.

After we swam, we came to the resort and had lunch. We packed to go home. It was the most
adventurous trip in my life.

My church feast

By Ann Lakni (12 years), Holy Family B. M. V., Wennappuwa

My church feast was held on May 13. Our church is dedicated to Saint Joseph. Wennappuwa church and the church premises were full of devotees on that day. There were two masses in the morning and another one in the evening.

Two pandals were erected, one in the church grounds and the other on the main road. They were so beautiful. One pandal was illuminated with hundreds of electric bulbs.

The procession carrying the statue of St. Joseph started at 2 p.m. Many people participated in the procession. It returned to church at about 7.30 p.m. The Holy Mass after the procession was conducted by the Bishop of Chilaw.

Environmental pollution

By Chathil Kumara (Grade 7), Republican Int. School, Nuwara Eliya

Beautiful flowers fluttering and dancing in the cool breeze, birds singing and flying from twig to twig, grazing deer in grassy lands and rivers flowing down through the valleys. What a beautiful environment.
What is happening to this environment today? Cutting trees, burning polythene and plastic, loud noise coming from factories and vehicles and many other harmful actions are destroying this beautiful
environment.

Nowadays people are suffering from diseases due to this environmental pollution. The percentage of carbon dioxide is increasing. Due to this the oxygen layer is getting depleted. Throwing garbage to the water ways is destroying the aquatic animals. So it is our duty to protect our environment. We must not cut trees.

If we cut trees we should plant more new trees. We should not burn polythene or plastic. We should
recycle them. We should not throw garbage into water ways. By these we can help to protect this precious environment. Let us all get together hand in hand to protect this god given gift.
