Another Success story - Disclosing the recognition for IIT students in the industry

Not many educational institutes come recommended by foreign embassies. Dharshana Jayawardena, Manager Software Engineering at Cambio Healthcare Systems, Sri Lanka, however states that he chose the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) purely based on the high recommendation received by the British embassy. At the time, IIT was the only accredited Institute offering a degree programme from a recognized UK University. To date IIT remains committed to providing a quality education, offering internationally recognized degrees and high calibre graduates for global positions in the Industry.

Dharshana Jayawardena said “ At IIT students can learn all of the required competencies needed for a successful career in Software Engineering. Every effort is made at the Institute to give students the very best in terms of educational knowledge as well as the soft skills and other personality development activities that enable us to make an impression in the industry.”

The placement year that is a unique feature of IIT education during the third year of study is one which sees the student working closely within the industry and being able to see their course work in practice. IIT is one of the very few, if not the only, educational institute offering a, 1 year industry placement. In return the new knowledge gained by working in the industry can be applied in their final year studies and specially in the project. The experience and the recognition received through this placement usually results in students being offered job opportunities even before they get their final year results. This is Dharshana’s story as well. He was engaged as a Software Engineer at Virtusa as soon as he finished his final exams.

At Virtusa, Dharshana was later promoted to Technical Manager and thereafter Senior Project Manager for the US office. Prior to joining his current workplace Dharshana also worked at Sage Training as a Senior Business Consultant. He now works at Cambio Healthcare Systems as Manager Software Engineering in charge of the organization’s Sri Lanka software engineering organization, staffed by over 180 Softwrae Engineers. Cambio Health is one of the Sweden’s largest and fastest growing IT companies for the healthcare sector and operates on a large scale internationally. They offer an integrated patient centric solution that spans all stages of the healthcare process. By working in collaboration with healthcare providers, Cambio is building an “e-health generation” that is committed to the improvement of patient’s care, patient’s safety and patient’s outcomes while reducing healthcare costs.

As an integral part of this operation, Dharshana firmly believes that he couldn’t have made it this far in a short period if not for the solid foundation in Technical Knowledge and Soft Skills instilled in him at IIT. He attributes his success to the content and recognition of the degree programme offered at IIT. “In the IT Industry when people see that you are a graduate of IIT, there is an instant appreciation and acknowledgement of the level of understanding and practical know how that you possess. When it comes to starting a career this is what is most important” concluded Dharshana Jayawardena.
