Nandasena was back on the green

The Sri Lankan Senior masters Golf Tournament 2012 got off to a sensational start with 13 Top Senior Pro's partnering Sri Lankan Amateur Golfers in the Pro-Am played to inaugurate the Senior Masters 'Exhibition' at the Victoria Golf & Country Resort Golf Course on Thursday.

The Team comprising promising Amateur 'Businessman' Golfer Sanjeewa Wickramanayake, Avanka Herath, local best Amateur Vijitha Bandara and Senior Pro Don Klenk from Canada scored 39 points to be the Winners. The Top Senior Master expected to win the Pro Tournament over 36 Holes Mike Harwood from Australia partnered Lasitha De Silva, Asiri Iddamalgoda and Gihan Wickramasinghe to be Runners-up with 36 points. a total of 13 Teams participated. It was played in a tremendous atmosphere and was a truly remarkable experience for the Sri Lankan Amateurs playing alongside Golfing Greats from the past.

Mike Harwood established his credentials with a fantastic 5 under par on Friday to lead the 52 strong Sri Lankan Senior Masters Pro-Golf 2012 Tournament at the half-way stage. Jamnian Chiterasong from Thailand shot a 2 under par, 71 to lie in second place 3 strokes behind the leader. Senior Pro from Canada Ahmed M Bateman was in third place with a 72. Sri Lankan Senior Pro K. Nandasena Perera invited to play, had a 5 over par, 78 on Day 1 and is 10 strokes behind the leader and in the middle of the chasing pack. The final round is underway and hopefully the Final Results maybe carried as a news flash!

Meanwhile the Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club entertained the Colombo Golfers over the Independence week-end and there was a lot of golf and 19th Hole camaraderie in 'chilly and wet weather'. The February Monthly Medal, the Fearnley Cup and the Ernest Ringle Cup were played with fair participation. The Fearnley Cup was first played in 1947 and is a Stable-ford format which Fazal Hameed won with 30 points from local golfing member, Dr. Janaka Gallangoda who scored 28 points playing off a18 handicap. The Ernest Ringle Cup introduced in 1985 won by 'legend' Ken Murray in that year was won by the current President of Royal Colombo Sarath Piyaratne who scored a creditable 34 points from Bandula Weerasinghe who was very close behind on 33 points. The Monthly Medal was of course played on stroke-play basis and Sunil Udalagama, returned a 72 Nett to beat Laith Ramanayake on 74 and the rest of the field. All said and done there was more fun for the Golfing members off the course than on the tough little course. However, 'Thank God for the 19th Hole ' said a very grateful golfer relaxing on the verandah after the arduous game!

Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club is the best place to be in April and the elaborate plans and the Annual fixtures are scheduled with a full calendar for the month with the usual Keith Rollo Cup, Sylvester Vase, Graeme Sinclair Cup, Scott Rowe Cup, Ogilvy Cup, Captain's Prize and the President's Prize coming up from the 6th of April through to the 20th.
