By Shamsser Jaleel

Former Thomian, CR & FC, and CCC (Colombo Cricket Club) player Asanga Seneviratne, is all set to be selected to the top post of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) uncontested. He will be supported by either former Petirite and Peterson SC Rugby Player Rizly Ilyaz or former Trinitian Shane Dullewewa who are contesting for the post of Secretary. Kiran Atapattu will come in as the Treasurer for yet another term.

The Annual General Meeting will take place on January 11 at the Water’s Edge. Asanga was also selected as the Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket recently under Upali Dharmadasa’s team. Asanga served under D.S. de Silva at the last Interim Committee during the Cricket World Cup 2011.

Asanga Seneviratne, who was an outstanding Cricketer at S. Thomas College, played for CCC and rugby for CR & FC. He also played for the Sri Lankan team and went on to coach his alma-mater. He also coached CR & FC and Sri Lanka in the shorter version of the game.

He was a specialist in coaching in the shorter version of the game with a lot of success at the Hong Kong and Dubai Rugby Sevens. He represented Sri Lanka national team at the 1988 Rugby Asiad.
Asanga Seneviratne has been the Vice President of the SLRFU since 2007. In 2009 when he was about to take over the Presidency with the resignation of three vital officials Minister of Sports appointed an interim committee to run rugby affairs.

Asanga will have the daunting task of appointing a National Coach, a new set of National Selectors who can dedicate their time for rugby in addition to promoting the national team from Asian Five Nations Tournament Division I to the Top division which will take place in April this year in Philippines.
