OUTREACH – Service before Self for the Prefects SIS

What Defines the modern Prefect?
A role model? A student leader? A disciplinarian?
The Prefects Guild 2011/2012 of SIS stepped into the arena of community service and social service. A role model indeed!

OUTREACH is the multi-phase community service project that commenced this October with a charitable visit to an Ayurveda Hospital in Doluwa. The patients received treatment in poor conditions and the premises needed considerable renovation.

The Prefects Guild undertook to finance and support the repainting of the entire hospital, in addition to providing refreshments and various essential items(soap, toothpaste, razors and other toiletries). Some of the items were donated by the students of SIS to the patients.

This visit to the Ayurveda Hospital in Doluwa, was the culmination of weeks of preparation and fundraising. Sheer dedication and hard work on the part of the Chairpersons, Erandi De Silva, Kissonkan Jayakumar and Ashwin Rajendran as well as the Head Prefect Sachin Parthalingam helped to pull this off, and inspired a team effort from each member of the Prefects Guild. This would not have been possible without the constructive advice and unwavering support of the teachers, staff advisor, Deputy Principals, and Principal, Mrs. Sunethra Taldena.

This is one of various community service projects that the Prefects Guild plans to launch this year, with many more projects lined up, including donations to orphanages and a beach-cleanup programme. Every member of the Guild, has a goal to reach in the service of the community and set a clear example for the rest of the students. This is considered an important part of their duty, both as Prefects and as individuals.

True to our school motto, they all hope to strive towards the light, and endeavour to serve their nation and the society they in with this aspiration in view. In the words of Albert Einstein: “A life lived for others, is a life worthwile.
