Devananda MMV ahead of its time

B/Sri Devananda Central College is an amazing E-Village school in the Uva Province, which gained most of its facilities and credits from its own students. They have been chosen one of the schools of the E-Village among 54 schools, which was introduced by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The principal K.H..W.M. Weerasinghe (SLPS/PGDEM)

The talented students of Devananda MMV designed their school website by themselves and created their own blogs to picture their talents to the world. As a result, they received sufficient funds from various donors to fulfill their ICT needs. They are maintaining a "Hardware and Network Solution Team" comprising of a professionally qualified graduate ICT teacher and trained senior students to attend to both Hardware and Software repairs.

The school is well equipped with all the ICT facilities to strengthen its infrastructure and were able connect all classrooms within the school premises, through the Wi-fi zone (Wireless Access Point), to maintain the teaching-learning process as well as their lesson plans.

The school was established in 1925 by the chief incumbent of the Malpotha Nigrodaaraama temple, Ven. Kandegedara Devananda Himi, at the temple premises, with only three students. In 1934, the school was taken over by the government. In 1939, the school was shifted to its present location, and named Mirahawatte Sri Devananda Vidyalaya. Then through the dedication and commitment of its principals and its staff, the school gradually achieved Madya Maha Vidyalaya status.

Now there are nearly 2,000 students and more than 80 academic staff, and is almost at the top of the Welimada Educational Zone, under the leadership of the present principal K.H.W.M. Weerasinghe (SLPS/PGDEM) who won the Prathibha Prabha Pranama award this year, from among 1,000 to 2,000 schools. He has also had several educational trainings in India and Canada as well.

Starting as a poor village school and achieving 2nd place in the All Island National Excellence award, 2009/10, is not an easy task. At the very beginning, when they received their first set of computers from the Ministry of Education, nobody knew anything about computers. Once the teachers and administrators learnt ICT and overcame their difficulty, the process of using computers progressed rapidly. Then the students of Devananda MMV communicated with a donor via E-mail and were gifted their second set of computers, as a memorial gift by Ajantha Sri Ramya of Berkley University, USA, in memory of his late daughter Dilini Sri Ramya.

The students started maintaining information systems through Websites, student documents and magazines. They have created their own Blogs. As a result, one of their students received a donation from a retired Portuguese Naval Officer, Mac Camber, with which assistance, the student scored 100% for ICT in his GCE (OL) examination. A great achievement.

The ICT section of the school has done a great service for the teachers to reach the classroom teaching-learning process successfully. They gather information for their respective subjects and distribute the additional knowledge among the students.

As a result, the students of Devananda MMV shine at public examinations with excellent results. This year, 30 students of this school got through the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination. They produced 100% ICT result with a couple of 9 A's at the GCE (OL) examination every year. GCE (AL) too brings them consistent success with a number of university entrants. Devananda MMV students shine in Sports, Language Day, Dancing, Art, Band competitions and win Provincial and National level medals for the school.

The teachers and students have produced their own educational Software and won many awards at Provincial level. One of the teachers and a student won an award for the All Island competition on New Inventions, for, Easy way to identify static electricity and Easy system of packing utensils."

The best among these is the activities of their E-Village team. They get together during weekends and conduct awareness programmes for villagers to improve their knowledge of farming and marketing. They have created an E-village Blog for the farmers to access, for their market prices.

The noteworthy feature of this school is the sense of order and discipline of the students that prevails within the school. "Molding a enterprising and innovative nation with the knowledge and abilities to cope with changing national and global challenges, with a balanced personality based on our culture and custom", is the vision of the school.

Their future target is for the fulfillment of their vision. We wish this exemplary young generation all success.
