My school

By K.L.D. Chiranga (Grade 4), St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy

My school’s name is St. Sylvester’s College in Kandy. It’s 80 years old. My school is very big and it has seven buildings, a big bus, an elephant etc. Although it’s not a national school, it delivers us the best education and the best citizens for the country. I love my school very much.

The Kandy Perahera is one of the most important and glorious festivals in Sri Lanka. The Kandy Perahera is sponsored by the Dalada Maligawa. This is being held once a year.

This is a world famous pageant and it is held in the month of August every year. People from all parts of the world come to see this historic festival.

The first festival is held only at the Maligawa premises. After that it goes on for seven days. Last perahera is the most glorious one. It is on that day the casket containing the Sacred Tooth Relic is carried through the streets on the back of Raja. Raja the Maligawa tusker is a world famous elephant.

The Kandyan dancers from all parts of the country go dancing in the perahera. The Kandy Perahera is also a display of our traditional Sinhalese dancing. The most important person in the perahera is the Diyawadana Nilame. He is responsible for conducting the perahera every year.

My favourite newspaper

By Savindu Herat (10 years), Royal Int. School, Kurunegala

There are many kinds of newspapers published in many languages. But among them I like Sunday Times because it carries my favourite Funday Times. There are very interesting games, competition, puzzles that I found in this paper. I am really interested in participating in these competitions. And also there are funny stories, jokes, poems, Environment, Kids World, Members’ Gallery and so many more.

Reading Funday Times gives me a vast amount of knowledge and also it is like a knowledgeable teacher for me. The History page provides me knowledge about the history of the world. For years and years I have won valuable gifts from Funday Times. From the day I started to write, I improved my handwriting, creativity, thinking ability and spelling. When I won gifts it encouraged me to participate for more competitions. Every week I am eagerly waiting to see the paper and to read it.

The Christmas party for the club members which was given by Funday Times also added to my
collection of unforgettable memories and thanks a lot for it. I wish you to live a long life to share knowledge with children.

I’m a butterfly

By Keshawa PV, Brilliant Stars Int., Matara

I had a hard life at the first stage of a butterfly, and that would be as a caterpillar. This is my little story.
It was a fine morning with the sweet feeling of pleasure, humming in the breeze. Birds sang their sweet songs, bees buzzed around looking for nectar, flowers bloomed in a beautiful manner.

That was the day I first saw the bright light of Mother Nature. It was so heavenly under the leaves my mother set up for my brothers and sisters. We are larvae which means baby insects. But I should start on my long journey of life and become the most enchanting creature of the globe.

So I stepped on to another leaf and… Crunch, munch, chomp, crunch. Oh my, that was the most refreshing (and first) meal I ate in my life. It must be a leaf I guess to be so green. I set off again,
munching on the gigantic leaves. Days and days I walked, eating, until one day I became a cocoon.
I had many exciting adventures before I became a butterfly.
