The show of shows on Friday

Come Friday, the cream of the Lankan junior cricketers will gather at the BMICH to get recognised for their deeds during the 2010/11 season at the awards ceremony of the Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year show.

Banuka Rajapaksa
Royal College

This year the main accolades go to Bhanuka Rajapakse of Royal College who is presently in England with the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team. He is crowned as the All Island Schoolboy Cricketer for 2011. Rajapakshe was the hot choice of all those who selected the award recipients for this year. He captained the England Under-19 tour of Sri Lanka and hit two centuries and collected 309 runs in two Test matches with an average of 103.00. He also performed extremely well in the five-match ODI series collecting 178 runs in four games against the English boys.

Rajapakshe was also picked as the All Island Schools Best Batsman while Richmond all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva who was also a member of the same tour was selected as the runner-up. De Silva emerged the runner-up of the Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the year.
In the emerging category Duleeka Tissakuttige of Mahanama was nominated as the emerging cricketer in addition to the best batsman’s award. Moratu Vidyalaya’s all-rounder Sanka Ramesh was selected as the runner up in the emerging cricketer’s category while he also swept the award as the best all rounder. Ramesh also was named as the runner-up in the best batsman’s category.

Trinity won the award for the best team. Royal, Colombo skipper Ramith Rambukwella is the most popular cricketer in the all-island category. In the emerging category Kavindu Ashan Perera of Royal, Panadura emerged as the winner. The most promising international schools cricketer of this year has been won Dhananjana De Jacolyn Senevirathne- Gateway College- Colombo.

To Shepard the flock of schoolboys in their future avenue the chief guest will be the national cricket think tank and former Sri Lanka opening batsman Sidath Wettimuny. Here Sidath will share his vast experience with the young ‘uns gathered and tell them how to tread the cricketing ground underneath their feet from this point onwards.

That’s not all. The day will not end there. In the entertainment part of the proceedings Nalin Perera and his band of musicians will keep the toes tapping while the evening’s entertainers will be none other than – inimitable Sunil Perera, Corrine Almeida and Rodney Warnakula who will be backed by the Prasadhi Dance Academy.

Once again our fervent plea is to make your evening the success that it will be – be in your seats by 5.30 p.m. so that the rest of the programme could go on without any unforeseen hiccups.
