IIHS understands that a nursing student should be exposed to the research environment from an early part of her career to develop the evidence based critical thinking that is necessary to practise professionally.

European Students conference is an annual conference held in Berlin since 1989. This time the conference will take place from 21st to 24th September 2011, at the Virchow Klinikum Campus of the University Teaching Hospitals (Charité Universitätsmedizin) in Berlin, Germany. Over 700 participants from all over the world are expected and Keynote speakers will present their current projects on tissue engineering and cell-reprogramming as well as their various potential applications in different clinical fields. Ms. Charitha Ranasinghe is one out of 20 researchers whose work has been selected under the pharmacology category from submissions received from all over the world.

Charitha is a Nursing student in the TAFE Enrolled Nursing 1st batch of IIHS who are supposed to go to TAFE South Australia at the end of this year to complete their Diploma in Nursing. The TAFE Nursing programme at IIHS is a two year programme, where the students could study the 1st year at IIHS and then transfer to TAFE South Australia in Adelaide to complete their Diploma. By studying the 1st year at IIHS the cost of the total programme is reduced by nearly 50% and they are eligible for registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) & work as an Enrolled Nurse in international settings.  With the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled) a student has the option of studying further, even up to a PhD in the Nursing field. IIHS is currently enrolling new students for their 03rd batch of TAFE Nursing Diploma which commences in the month of September 2011.

Speaking on her achievement and also a bit of her pathway towards how she became a Nursing student, she briefed; “I started my Schooling at Nayakakanda Girls’ Primary School where I got through from the grade five scholarship exam and I was lucky enough to enter Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda. Later I successfully completed my Ordinary Level with 8A passes and 2C passes. I selected Bio Stream for my further studies. Unfortunately I was unable to enter the desired program in the university, but there was hope and I wished to pursue higher education in the field of health sciences. Ultimately, I chose nursing as my career and I selected IIHS for my further studies”.“I was always interested in research, but I was worried if I could manage such a big task. However, I briefed my idea to Dr. Ishara Maduka, who is a full time lecturer at IIHS, and he helped me a lot throughout this research. He is the great pillar who was behind this success. Finally I completed the research and with the guidance of Dr. Ishara, I submitted this to the 22nd European Student conference in Berlin, Germany and fortunately they accepted my research paper for their conference.”

“This great opportunity will help me to broaden the knowledge and will give me a great experience. Furthermore, I feel so happy with the effort which I put in throughout my life to be a good student. I would like to take this opportunity to be thankful to Dr. Ishara Maduka, Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe, Ms. Miriam Josiah, Mrs. Dilini Tanner and all of my lecturers, my loving parents, sister and all my colleagues who helped me a lot to achieve this success.” Dr. Nihal De Silva, Dean of IIHS, speaking about Charitha’s achievements commented that IIHS is very proud of her accomplishment and that this is the first time a student at IIHS is going to represent the institute and the country at an international stage. He further stated that this would benefit her and also the student population as a whole.
