33 Bogambara prisoners in rooftop protest, 195 on hunger strike

Demand reduction of their sentences; Welikada, Mahara prisoners protest for same demand
By J.A.L. Jayasinghe

Thirty-three prisoners protested on rooftops at Bogambara Prison, while 195 others facing life sentences and capital punishment, went on a hunger strike, demanding a reduction of their sentences.
Prisoners at Welikada and Mahara prisons too are engaged in protests for the same demand.

The 33 prisoners protesting on the rooftop, have damaged State property within the Prison premises, and hence, will face legal action, a prison spokesman said.

He further said that due to the hunger strike, meals prepared for the 195 prisoners went waste, thus wasting public funds.

Prison officials have appointed armed prison officers to maintain security within the Prison, while Kandy police head office has assigned a mobile police security service around the prison to ensure security outside.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Kandy, I.M. Karunaratne said that the night police security has been strengthened, following a request by the Prison administration.
