Motivational speaker Craig Valentine talks leadership in Colombo

By Jagdish Hathiramani

1999 World Champion of Public Speaking (Toastmasters) Craig Valentine recently visited Sri Lanka, where he held two motivational speaking session: A morning programme on leadership and an evening event on public speaking. In the leadership session, Mr. Valentine talked about qualities of "exceptional leaders," including: "lead yourself first"; "leaders create leaders, not followers"; "always be the most positive person in the room"; and "make people visible, make yourself valuable", "work to get your boss promoted and your subordinate to replace you" and many others.

He also introduced the audience, a group of approximately 60-70 people, each paying Rs. 7,500 for this two-hour morning session at Colombo's Cinnamon Grand Hotel, to his "The 4 Rs to Remarkable Results" consisting of Reality and the use of facts and feelings to communicate instead of judgments and generalisations as well as Relinquishing old ways, old life and old people. Additionally, he also commented on Rely and Reform.

Mr. Valentine also touched upon the best way to encourage people. Based on the acronym SSIP, he indicated that praise be given out with Specifics, Sincerity, Immediacy and Personalisation. Further, he also revealed the key to non verbal communication, which was conveyed via the acronym SOFTEN, as Smiling, having an Open posture and not sitting behind a desk, leaning Forward to signal interest, respecting the other's Territory (space, culture, physical comfort zone, etc.), maintaining non confrontational Eye contact, and Nodding to show show encouragment and active listening.

Meanwhile, Mr. Valentine's evening programme on public speaking was said to feature sessions on the following topics: "How to find confidence in front of a crowd"; "How to build a message which sticks"; "How to deliver a message that is memorable"; "How to keep an audience spellbound"; "How to motivate and influence and audience to prompt action"; and "How to craft, deliver and sell your message".
