Deaf Schools ready for sports contests

The Deaf Schools six-a-side softball cricket tournament will take place on June 4 (Saturday) at the Health Grounds, Borella while the Deaf Schools Netball Tournament will be worked off on June 11 (Saturday) at the Deaf School grounds at Ratmalana, The Deaf Schools Volleyball Tournament (boys and girls) will take place at the Deaf School grounds, Ratmalana in the same day. All competitions will commence at 9 am.

The awards ceremonies for all events will take place after the finals of the volleyball tournament on June 11. These tournaments are organized by the Deaf School Past Pupils Association, The School for the Deaf Ratmalana under the guidance of the President and Chairman Organizing Committee Shivantha Vivekanandan, (partnered by Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC) for the tenth consecutive year.
The deaf schools taking part in the tournaments are: The School for the Deaf Ratmalana, Islamic Center for the Physically Handicapped Thihariya, Yasodara Deaf and Blind School Bandarawela, Sayan Deaf School Matale, The School for the Deaf Tangalle, Sandagala Special School Kurunegala, Rohana Special School Matara, Senkadagala School for the Deaf Kandy and YMCA School for the Deaf Batticaloa.

Caltex trophies, replicas and certificates will be awarded. Special replicas will also be awarded to the best batsman, best bowler, best fielder and the man of the match in cricket, the best player and best shooter in netball and the best player amongst boys and girls in volleyball. Gifts will also be given to all players. The competition is open to all deaf schools in the island.

Entry forms can be obtained from Bandula Peiris (Hony Secretary), Deaf School Past Pupils Association, The School for the Deaf Ratmalana or Mrs. Palika Perera (Vice Principal) on Tel: 2636351 during school hours. Entries close on May 10.

Volleyball finals on May 7

Volleyball fans in Sri Lanka will witness some enthralling volleyball when the finals of Munchee National Volleyball Championship 2011 will get underway on May 7 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. The tournament is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation with Ceylon Biscuits Ltd being the main sponsors. According to the President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, Minister Dilan Perera more than four thousand teams took part in this years competition and great enthusiasm prevailed in the northern and eastern parts of the country.

In the 2nd division finals of the national championship Casualine Sports Club Mawathagama will confront Vijaya Sports Club Koswadiya in the women’s category. In the men’s event it will be Sri Lanka Army Kandy team that will take on National Youth Services Council Team.

In the super league category, Sri Lanka Air Force women will meet the ladies from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. In the much awaited men’s finals Sri Lanka Ports Authority will take on the Sri Lanka Navy, who is appearing at a national final for the first time in the history. Ironically, the defending champions of both categories have failed to make it to the finals this year. Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Ports Authority won the men’s and women’s championships last year. Winners of all categories will receive handsome cash awards and trophies.

Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage, President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation Minister Dilan Perera, Minister Pavitra Wanniarchchi, Secertary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Commander of the Navy , Commander of the Air Force , Group Director CBL Ltd. Nandana Wickramage and a host of distinguished invitees are due to attend the event.
