Gateway students excel at Advanced Level and IGCSE

Gateway Colleges Colombo, Kandy and Negombo had much to celebrate with several students achieving outstanding academic results during the last academic year. All three schools held their Awards Days recently in the distinguished presence of the High Commissioner of Australia Kathy Klugman, Research Professor of Institute of Fundamental Studies Professor Savithri Kumar, and the Managing Director of NCC Education UK Dr Felix Stravens as Chief Guests in Colombo, Kandy and Negombo respectively.

There were thirteen Gateway students who achieved 7 A Stars or above at the June 2010 Edexcel IGCSE Examination. This included three students who obtained 11 A Stars each. Thilina Panduwawala of Gateway College Colombo and Apsara Tennakoon of Gateway College Kandy topped the list with 11 A Stars and an A each.

Twenty three students received 3 A grades or more at the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level of which Nishan Srishankar of Gateway College, Colombo, who received the best IGCSE/OL result in Sri Lanka last year, repeated his success by achieving 5 A Grades. Several students of this batch of students have completed Mathematics by now, through their sitting in January 2011. Of them, Tharindu Dissanayake of Gateway College Kandy, is already in line for a World Prize by securing 600 out of 600 (100% in all 6 Units).

Eighteen students received 3 As or more at Advanced Level (A2).Ramesh Weerakoon (Four A*s), Anjali Rajadurai (5As) and Dulanjani Soundararajan (2A*s and 2As) received Edexcel Trophies for the best Advanced Level results in each school.

Gateway College is proud to offer the largest and most comprehensive selection of educational choices - enabling parents and students to choose the best education programme for academic growth and success. The range of subjects offered at Advanced Level Science, Business and Humanities sectors include Mathematics, Further Maths, Pure Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business Studies, Accounts, Applied ICT, English Language & Literature and Psychology. They have been arranged in a way where even uncommon combinations of subjects can be taken to suit students' future careers. Gateway strongly encourages the students who wish to pursue demanding careers such as Medicine and Engineering to study four AL subjects.

Students also have the option of taking 3 Advanced Level subjects along with a Diploma and thereby fast tracking their Degree studies. Through this arrangement, they are also able to keep their options open until they complete the two years of study at Advanced Level where they could even opt for a different career to what they were planning at the commencement of their Advanced Level studies.
An additional International Foundation Programme is available for students who wish to join after Sri Lankan or London OL. It is a 9 month course, offering an accelerated learning pathway from O/L to university degree entry. The programme in addition to raising students' English and Mathematics skills will also provide a firm grounding in Business and Computing along with study skills, personal development and culture.
