In twenty years Amal ascends step by step to levels higher…

Amal International school from what it was at the inception to what it is today is unimaginable. In twenty years it has blossomed out into this modern three storied majestic edifice fully complete with all the infrastructure and facilities that are no second to any leading International School.

This transformation from a 3 roomed shack in a junkyard is indeed magnificent and awesome. The genuine intention and aspirations of a humble lawyer namely Mr M.C.M Zarook and his far fetched dream of educating in the English medium, the middle class children in Colombo South has indeed been realized. The cutting of the first sod by Marhoom Al Haj A.C.S.Hameed (Inna lillahi wa inna illaihi rajioon) M.P and Minister of Justice and Higher Education at that time, ie January 29 1991 was indeed a magical moment for the birth of Amal International School.

Brick by brick, step by step Amal grew, because it has always been backed by generous hearted people who genuinely strove for its stride. This farsighted thinking of our founder director bought about a revolutionary change in the educational reforms of that time a change from the government set rule of Swabasha education in all schools, into the English medium for the G.C.E O/L exam in the local curriculum.

In the year 2009 Mr M.S.M.Liyawdeeen an eminent retired Deputy General Manager of the Bank of Ceylon and the Chairman of the Centre for Islamic studies at Rohini Road, Wellawate took over, and brought about many invaluable innovations. His Board of Directors comprises the former Chairman Mr Hanif Yousuf, the former secretary to the board of Directors Mr Ashroff Rumy attorney at law, Mr Nazeer Lathiff, Mr Kaleelur Rahman, Mr Ashfaq Ahmed, the late Professor Marhoom M.T.M.Jiffry, Mr Shifraz Ali, Mr Fazmil Fyzer, Mr Fuvaiz Moulana, Mr Furkhan Mansoor and Mr Aslah.

Amal boasts of one of the finest Basketball courts in the island. Amalians can proudly say " We are the Champions" in the field of Basketball. In 2009 two of our players Mr Rizan Zain and Abdul Azeez Aboobucker represented Sri Lanka in the Universal Peace Federation of Asia for the Wongu Peace Cup in South Korea and won bronze medals for the country. In 2010 six of our Basketball players namely M.Rizan, Azeez Aboobucker, M.T Fazal, Shabeer Ahamed, Shafraz Nizam and Thanveer Ashroff represented Sri Lanka again and won Silver Medals for the country. Amalian Basketball under 17 team emerged all Island Colombo Zonal Champions in 2009.

The 20th Anniversary celebration which started on January 31 will go on right throughout the year . At this year's Amal Day celebrations the Principal of Zahira College Colombo Mr M.H.M.Jiffry was the Chief Guest. The Chairman Mr M.S.M Liyawdeen and members of the Board of Directors were special guests of honour at this celebration. Mr Jiffry in his address spoke on the aims and ambitions each child should have and the goals that he should aim at. Mr Ashroff Rumy a senior member of the Board of Directors also addressed the students and teachers and gave a brief history of the school.

This year the scouts of Amal were introduced to First-Aid by the St John's Ambulance. Mr Gamini enlightened everyone about their aims. Members of the staff who complete 10 years of service are awarded at the Amal Day Celebrations. This tradition was followed when Mr M.H.A.Fareed and Ms.Niyabah Sahly were awarded. Last year about 14 members were awarded for their dedicated and long years of service.

Two students T. Manuhran of the Bio Stream and Hibshy Moulana of the Commerce Stream were also awarded for their best results at the G.C.E A/L Exam in 2010. Slowly but steadily Amal International is climbing step by step to levels higher and higher by producing well educated Accountants, a student holding a Master's in Information Technology, students following medicine in Russia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and is proud of the fact that already one of the students Shafraz Shahied has passed out as an MBBS doctor. Amal salutes all its students and expects them to hold high the torch of fame with the blessing of Almighty Allah.

Mrs A.R.Mihla, Deputy Principal.
