By Shamseer Jaleel

Former Isipathana College, Police SC and Sri Lanka fly-half Nizam Jamaldeen was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka Referees Society at the 54th AGM held at CR & FC Club Auditorium. Former Havelocks SC player Vipula Dharmadasa and former Kandy SC player Anil Jayasinghe were appointed as Vice President of the Society.

Jamaldeen represented his alma mater in 1983 and 1984 as a fly half and later on represented the Police SC from 1986 to 1995. Jamaldeen ultimately captained Police XV as well. He was instrumental in Police winning the John Player League on a number of occasions. As a referee he still holds highest respect in the country as well as in the Asian Region to date. The following were appointed as Office Bearers for 2011-2012 President: Nizam Jamaldeen, Vice Presidents: Vipula Dharmadasa and Anil Jayasingha, Secretary; Dinka Pieris, Treasurer: Shamrath Fernando.

Indians lynched by Tsotsobe

A devastating display of limited-overs bowling from Lonwabo Tsotsobe put South Africa in control of the second ODI against India at the Wanderers. The 26-year-old produced career-best figures of four for 22 from his 10 overs as India were bowled out for 190, with only Yuvraj Singh (53) passing 50. Only Wayne Parnell was expensive as Graeme Smith, captaining the Proteas for a record 139th time, marshaled an impressive bowling display.

India started sluggishly and their struggles were compounded when Murali Vijay was removed by Tsotsobe, Morne Morkel holding a good catch running back as the ball dropped over his shoulder.
Parnell was unable to achieve the same miserly economy rate as Tsotsobe and Dale Steyn, but with Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli finding fielders more often than not, it was slow progress.

India passed 50 in the 15th over, but a diving Kohli was run out by David Miller soon after and worse was to come as Tendulkar played on to Johan Botha, cutting at a ball that turned in from outside off. That left Yuvraj and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to rebuild at 67 for three, and they were content largely to deal in ones and twos.

A paddle sweep from Dhoni off JP Duminy for a couple took India to 100 in the 28th over, before a rare boundary took Yuvraj past 50, but the very next ball he hit a Tsotsobe slower delivery straight to Steyn at mid-off.

Suresh Raina was quickly into his stride as Parnell continued to suffer, but Tsotsobe dismissed him lbw at the start of the batting powerplay to leave India 169 for five in the 42nd over.

Tsotsobe's rampage continued in his final over as Dhoni dragged on for 38, and the Indian tail did little to improve the situation as they folded with 16 balls remaining.

N. Zealand melt down

WELLINGTON, Jan 15, 2011 (AFP) - Pakistan again exposed the brittleness of the New Zealand batting line up when they reduced the Black Caps to 246 for six at stumps on the first day of the second Test on Saturday.

In what has become a familiar pattern in recent Tests, the New Zealand lower order was asked to prop up the innings after the top order had largely failed. Apart from a stubborn 78 by Ross Taylor there was little of substance in the face of a bowling attack which toiled away on a pitch that held few demons.

Taylor reached 78, his 11th Test half century, while the next highest score was captain Daniel Vettori, the number eight batsman, who was unbeaten on 38 at stumps.

Discarded Sana thumps 97

Ruhuna recorded their first win when they defeated Uva by 95 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method in the Inter-Provincial limited over encounter played at the SSC ground yesterday. Uva chasing a target of 286 runs were 131 for 7 when bad light stopped play with the required score at that stage being 227 runs.

The morning session saw Ruhuna make a formidable score of 285 for 8 with former Sri Lanka opener Sanath Jayasuriya coming back to form with a knock of 97 made off 111 balls that included ten boundaries.

Uva in their run chase were nowhere and besides opener Mahela Udawatte the others failed to make any impression. The sixth match of the tournament will be played today between Kandurata led by Kumara Sangakkara and Wayamba led by Mahela Jayawardena at the same venue.
