Ajantha cameo stuns reigning champs

Six teams advance to the quarter finals

The completion of the first day’s play of the fifth Cambrian Cricket Wing Six a Side cricket tournament played at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday saw six teams advance to the quarter finals.
Army along with SSC, NCC, Saracens, Panadura and last year’s runner up BRC were the six teams to make it the quarter final.

Two pre-quarter matches remained to be played which are between Colts and Antonians and Tamil Union against Air Force. The two teams winning these matches will join the six teams.
The highlight of the preliminary round matches was the performance by Army who succeeded in recording a convincing win over Bloomfield who are champions for the last three years.

Army came into their game against Bloomfield after registering a win over host Old Cambrians in the first round. Army spearheaded by Ajantha Mendis taking first lease of the wicket made an imposing 85 for 5 which incidentally was the highest score made so far and then restricted Bloomfield to a score of 51.

In the other matches played Panadura overcame neighbors Sebastianites, Air Force got the better of Seeduwa/Raddoluwa CC, Moratuwa over Police, Saracens against Lankan CC and BRC over fancied Badureliya CC.

The Cambrians Cricket Wing Sixes conducted for the fifth successive year with the participation of 24 teams and the notable absentee was CCC who pulled out at the last moment.
The winners of this tournament will receive a cash award Rs. 100,000/- and a trophy while the runner up will receive a cash award of Rs. 50,000/-. Apart from cash awards of Rs. 10,000/- will be awarded to the best batsman, bowler, man-of-the-match and for the most number of sixes.

Army 65 for 2 in 5 overs (Pubudu Peiris 27 n.o., Dilan Soysa 24 n.o.) beat Old Cambrians 63 for 1 in 5 overs (Shehan Fernando 29 n.o., Shehan Jayasuriya 25 n.o.). Badureliya CC 75 for 1 in 5 overs (Shalika Karunanayake 32rtd, Tharindu Attanayake 31 rtd) beat Ragama CC 74 for 1 in 5 overs (Nayana Priyanjana 36rtd, Rumesh Buddika 19 n.o., Saliya Saman 15 n.o.). Panadura 60 for 1 (Ranga Cooray 31rtd. Tharindu Thushan 22) beat Sebastianites 59 for 2 in 5 overs (Dananjaya Fernando 34rtd: Dhanuja Nandana 2 for 4). Moratuwa 49 for 2 in 3.4 overs (S. Kasun 15) beat Police 48 for 5 in 5 overs (N. Tharanga 25 n.o.: T. Chamath 2 for 4). Air Force 72 for 4 in 4.5 overs (T. Damayantha 25: A. Dasun 2 for 5, N. Lakshitha 2 for 17) beat Seeduwa/Raddoluwa CC 69 for 1 in 5 overs (A. Dasun 33rtd, D. Jayatileke 23 n.o.). Army 85 for 5 in 5 overs (Ajantha Mendis 31rtd, Dilan Soysa 18, Nawantha Ratnayake 27 n.o.) beat Bloomfield 51 for 3 in 5 overs (Dilshan Munaweera 26: Ajantha Mendis 2 for 9). Saracens 56 for 3 in 5 overs (Samith Dushantha 28, Demintha Dahanayake 18 n.o.) beat Lankan CC 56 for 3 in 5 overs (Ashen Silva 25). BRC 75 for no loss in 4.1 overs (S. Chandika 36 n.o., M. Nimesh 31 n.o.) beat Badureliya CC 70 for 1 in 5 overs (Shalika Karunanayake 35rtd).
