Time to take a good hard look at the Buddha Sasana

The 18th Amendment to the Constitution has given wide powers to the President. He is now riding a wave of success and fortune. This is a most opportune moment to take a step to cleanse the Buddha Sasana. Protection of Buddhism is also enshrined in the Constitution.

The President should consider bringing in legislation to prohibit the clergy contesting elections to parliament and other local government institutions.

I am suggesting this because many Buddhists in Sri Lanka including the Maha Nayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters, Ven Bellanwila and Ven Wimalarathane and many other chief monks have from time to time publicly expressed that Bhikkhus becoming professional politicians has damaged the nobility, sanctity and respect of the Buddha Sasana in our country.

Leena Gunaratne, Piliyandala
