Australian migration changes

By Surani Punchihewa

On February 8, 2010, the Department of Immigration and Emigration announced a number of changes that were to take effect from the mid 2010.

Amongst the changes were abolishing of Migration Occupation in Demand List (MODL), which took into effect immediately on the date of announcement. In addition, the Immigration and Emigration Minister announced of capping of applications lodged prior to 2007 September, which also has not concluded. With this regard, the Department of Immigration and Emigration has made indication to certain applicants that their application would be returned. In addition, we are anticipating a change in the point system as well as a revamping of the GSM programme. I presume, all of us were impatiently waiting for the release of the new Skills Occupation List (SOL), which was scheduled on April 30.

However, a release did not happen according to plan, and was yet announced the lease to be taking place in the month of May. Applicants who are making applications under the GSM programme are advised to continue to do so under the existing SOL that would be accepted until the legislative changes take place in mid this year. I can say that we have come to a critical point now that professional advice becomes absolutely necessary when starting the application process now. Bare in mind, if you have concluded the skills assessment process and fulfilled the IELTS criteria, you could still stand the chance of successfully lodging the Australian visa.

ELLC catering to requirement for IELTS and English British Council Approved IELTS Test Centre

Education is of paramount importance and the requirement for English has been essential in our country for years.

Therefore with the objective of helping our people to obtain the knowledge and training they require the Australian Migration Centre, Nugegoda proudly launched its new business entity being the English Language Learning Centre on March 25, 2010 and commenced classes on April 3, 2010.
ELLC is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities fully furnished classrooms and updated syllabuses to provide its students the best training to enable them to achieve their goal.

However, understanding that IELTS is not the only requirement of our people we do have an academic schedule to offer courses for spoken English as well as Grammar for professionals who require much assistance in this area.

ELLC would not be confined to the above only. We do have futuristic plans to expand our academic schedule further thereby catering to the diverse requirements of all as well as the corporate sector.
ELLC aims to provide a superlative personalized service to all its students at all times. Hence individual consultations are done with each student and they are given the exact guidance as to which course is best suited for them.

Coupled with the consultation each individual is required to sit for a "Readiness test" in order to assess their level of English and capacity thereby enrolling them for a course that befits them. Further in order to assist our students we offer flexible time scheduling at no additional cost and always seek to facilitate the convenience of our students.

Our teachers possess over 10 years work experience in teaching and are able to understand each individual's level of knowledge and ability thereby targeting their weak areas and building up on such areas so that the individual obtains a beneficial training at all times.

Furthermore, as a British Council approved Test Centre we have the provision of registering our students for the IELTS Examinations and processing all the necessary documentation on behalf of them.

Although at present the Examinations are conducted at a venue arranged by the British Council in future ELLC hopes to provide this facility as well.

We currently have classes 7 days a week from morning till nightfall which facilitates the requirements of the working community as well.
The courses on offer are as follows:

  • IELTS 30-hour and 50-hour classes
  • IELTS 10-hour fast track course
  • IELTS one-day workshop
  • Spoken English and Grammar
    classes
  • IELTS readiness test
