SLIIT: paving the way for future IT specialists

The scope for Information Technology has broken through all barriers to emerge one of the most lucrative and sought-after industries today. The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), in keeping with the rising standards in the IT industry, seeks to address these demands by providing well structured Master's degree programmes with the aim of producing highly qualified IT specialists who will contribute towards taking Sri Lanka to the next level in this industry.

These flexible Master's degree programmes will be of two years' duration, amounting to four semesters consisting of 14 weeks each, and are offered in the following streams; Master of Science in Information Technology (IT), Master of Science in Information Management (IM) and Master of Science in Information Systems (IS). Candidates who successfully complete the first two semesters (one year) will be eligible to receive the Postgraduate Diploma.

The programmes are structured in a manner expedient to students who wish to continue their studies up to PhD level, where they will be provided with the requisite knowledge and tools necessary to further individual and self-directed research required for PhD studies.

Dr. Samantha Thelijjagoda, Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Course Coordinator at SLIIT, relates that the objective of these well-structured Master's degree programmes is to produce top notch graduates within the IT industry. "These skilled specialists will contribute towards applying their knowledge and expertise to produce innovative IT solutions within the modern business and industry sectors, utilise IT strategic planning skills in enterprises that make use of large scale IT applications, and competently undertake research and development within this industry as well as business enterprises".

Professor Lalith Gamage, President and CEO at SLIIT, accentuates the need to provide courses and programmes targeting key areas within the field of Information Technology in Sri Lanka. "By opening more doors for students to further their studies in specific areas within this field, we aim to nurture a new generation of experts that will contribute towards the development of the industry as well as the country".

Professor Karunaratne, Chairman at SLIIT, stated that SLIIT takes immense pride in continually expanding its facilities in order to provide students with the much needed opportunities to further their goals and careers. Recognised as the foremost tertiary institution in the country, providing education both in the spheres of Business and Electronic Engineering alongside Information Technology, SLIIT continues to progress within a demanding and constantly evolving industry.
