Two world prize winners

"Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness" proclaimed the great thinker and self development writer of the nineteenth century, Napoleon Hill. The above statement has exemplified by two youths of this island namely Ashana Hapuarachchi and Achini Madushika. Yes, the above students have won world prizes for their diploma and advanced diplomas in Information & Communication Technology offered by the Informatics Academy, Singapore and validated by NCC Education UK. Indeed, they are dedicated, well organized, regular, keen and passionate to learn new ideas.

The Informatics diplomas and advanced diplomas are on par with the first and second year of British undergraduate programmes and recognized by leading universities and awarding bodies in the UK and Australia, which are accredited by the respective regional Quality Assurance agencies. Informatics Education - a public company listed on the Singapore Main Board Stock Exchange, ensures its global presence through its eighty eight centres located in more than twenty countries. Singapore Informatics Computer Institute (Pvt.) Ltd. is a BOI approved company and a fully owned subsidiary of Informatics Education of Singapore.

All the higher education courses offered by Singapore Informatics are being set, marked and moderated by the academic staff of Informatics Academy, Singapore. Additionally, the academic quality of the programmes offered by Informatics Academy is subjected to annual quality audits by the partner universities. The local lecturers' role is neither preparing the exam papers, nor marking final exam answer scripts, not even moderating it, but facilitate student learning through lectures, tutorials and discussion sessions. In the above context, competing with the students who have been taught and prepared by the same professor who set the exam paper is rather challenging and astonishing as well. We had an opportunity for a brief interview with both of the above achievers, which was elevating and worthwhile of sharing with the readers of Sunday Times.

Ashana indicated that she was striving to achieve distinctions for all the modules in the Advanced Diploma. However, she was surprised to win the above world prize, which was incredible. Ashana's achievement is a testament for the inspirational phrase emphasizing that 'nothing is impossible'. It was amazing to know, that Ashana managed to grasp the subject at the last moment, however her main piece of advice for juniors is to learn the subjects on time. Ashana is now reading for her BSc (Hons) Technology Management and Computing offered by the University of Portsmouth, UK through the e-learning portal of Informatics Global Campus, Singapore.

For Achini, this is an accomplishment, which she perused over one long year with the support and advice of lecturers and colleagues. Achini's ambition is to become an IT professional in the private sector. Achini is now reading for her advanced diploma and she is confident enough to maintain an impressive performance all over her career.

The lecturers of both students have expressed their satisfaction on their hard work which made them outstanding in the international arena. Especially, they have utilized the resources available for them to uncover their optimum potential. Unlike other professions, teaching is an exclusive role of imparting the best and enjoying the success as his/ her own. Therefore, the remarkable achievements of these students will strengthen the ongoing tradition of academic excellence, which remains as an element rather than an exception for the teaching quality of Singapore Informatics. The Director/General Manager of Singapore Informatics, Mr. Boshan Dayaratna congratulated the above students and extended his appreciation for the panel of lecturers for facilitating the above success.

As Benjamin Franklin indicates, "Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning" Recognizing the above reality, Singapore Informatics has expanded its horizons to some other parts of the country from this year onwards. Also the management of Singapore Informatics have almost confirmed with the relocation of campus to a new building, which will enable students to use the state-of-the-art technology for learning support. As a learning organization, we are committed to upgrade our learning infrastructure with the cutting edge technological advances, and introduce innovative ways to facilitate student learning in the forthcoming future.

Brilliance is a matter of choice. The uniqueness of the informatics academia is relying not only on the teaching quality, but also on its ability to impart confidence on students.

Intelligence is not inherited through birth; it is a matter of how well we utilize the resources and energies given to us by circumstances.

Therefore, let me conclude this article by quoting the words of Abraham Lincoln, whose life was an embodiment of success in the history of humankind. "That some achieve great success, is proof to all that others can achieve it as well"
