Basnahira North came out on top against Hirdramani Ruhuna at the end of the third days play in the Bank of Ceylon four day encounter played at the Galle International Stadium. Basnahira North despite a knock of 109 by youngster Dinesh Chandimal had the Ruhuna side in trouble. Chandimal’s 122 ball knock with 11 boundaries and three sixes along with another fine knock of 73 by Geeth Alwis saved the day for Ruhuna.

The pair put on a valuable 115 runs stand for the third wicket while the others failed to impress helping them resuming from their overnight score of 140 for 2 make 301. But it was insufficient for Ruhuna to escape the follow on where they ended on 10 for 1 still needing a further 227 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Earlier Basnahira North skipper Thilina Kandamby winning the toss and electing to take first lease of the wicket made a massive 538 for 9 before declaring. The massive innings saw three centurions spearheaded by Dilshan Munaweera who made a career best 153, Sachitra Serasinghe and Kaushal Silva.

Basnahira North (359/3 o’night) 538 for 9 declared in 146.1 overs (Dilshan Munaweera 153, Sachitra Serasinghe 117, Kaushal Silva 108, Thilina Kandamby 68, Bathiya Perera 42, Roshen Silva 26: Sachitra Senanayake 4 for 188, Sujeewa de Silva 2 for 57, Geeth Alwis 2 for 67)

Nadeera and Ishan rescue Kandurata

Nadeera Nawela and Ishan Muthaliph rescued MAS Holdings Kandurata with knocks of 81 and 63 n.o respectively to help them from a certain defeat on day three of the Bank of Ceylon Inter-Provincial four day match played at Bloomfield grounds in Reid Avenue. Nadeera who has been consistent in the matches he has played this season cracked five boundaries and two sixes while Ishan who came late down the batting slammed six boundaries and a six.

Nadeera was involved in two 56 runs partnership first for the first wicket with Kanchana Gunawardena and the other for the third wicket with Suraj Randiv. Later in the innings Ishan came to the rescue of Kandurata who were struggling with the score on 177 for 8 when he added a valuable 68 runs for the ninth wicket with Chaminda Vidanapathirana enabling them to end the day on 252 for 9.

Bad light put a stoppage to play and it is unlikely that Kandurata could prevent Basnahira South from gaining an outright victory as they have a lead of only 131 runs with one wicket remaining.
Earlier Basnahira South took a 121 run lead by making 300 which came on the back of a knock of 109 from Prasanna Jayawardena. This was in reply to Kandurata’s score of 179.
