Once again the national cricket selectors have dropped to four with Asantha de Mel (Chairman), Don Anurasiri, Chaminda Mendis and Vinothan John. The term of the present set of selectors is due to end in April.

A section of the cricket elite feel that some of the selectors who have served for long periods have overstayed in their positions. For instance former national left arm spinner Don Anurasiri has been occupying a national cricket selector’s seat for more than seven years now.

The general practice is that Sri Lanka Cricket forwarding a list of names and the Minister of Sports under the powers vested in him under the Sports Law selecting a given number of persons to the positions.

When inquired from SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga as to why Brendon Kuruppu was removed from the position National Cricket Manager he said that there was no specific reason and it was only Kuruppu’s contract as the manager expired after the tour of Bangladesh and the authorities thought that there should be a change in the run up to the World Cup which will be action in February 2011. Former Sri Lanka skipper Anura Tennekoon who was a selector replaced Kuruppu last week.

In the recent past many a prominent cricketers also have declined to take the position as national cricket selectors.
