Major shake-up rocks police

Over 200 officers, including 18 DIGs transferred

Some 209 police officers together with 99 gazetted officers that include 18 Deputy Inspectors General have been transferred with immediate effect in what is described as an unprecedented shake-up in the Police Department in the aftermath of the Jan. 26 Presidential election.

Confirming the transfers, Police spokesman Priyantha Jayakody told the Sunday Times last night that among those who were transferred were 81 officers holding the ranks Senior Superintendents (SSPs), Superintendents (SPs) and Assistant Superintendents (ASPs) and 110 OICs from the ranks of Chief Inspectors, Inspectors and Sub Inspectors, serving in all parts of the country. Most of these officers were serving in the north and east.

The spokesman said a series of changes were effected at police Headquarters too, but he declined to elaborate when asked why.Among the senior most officers moved out was Senior DIGs Nimal Leuke. He was being moved from the Northern Range to the Criminal Record Department (CRD).

Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne who is in charge of elections has been moved to the Central Province while Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka has been put in charge of Support Service at police headquarters. Senior DIG K. P. P. Pathirana has been moved to Field Force HQ and Senior DIG G. G. J. P Gamage to Kurunegala.

The DIGs who received transfer orders were:

S. W. M. T B. Samarakone moved from North Western Province (West) to Police HQ (Buildings), M.P. Samaradiwakara from NWP (East) to Additional Staff directly under IGP, J. Abeysirigunawardene from Training and Examinations to NWP (East), Lalith. A Jayasinghe from Personal to Police Academy and Examinations, Y. R. W. Wijeygoonawardene from Wanni West to basic Training at Police HQ, R. S. P. Siriwardene from Logistics to Field Force HQ, Fabian Mitchell from FF HQ to Recruitment Range, V. A. S. P. Nanayakkara from Western Province Southern range to Supplies Police HQ, H. A. Hettiaarachchi from eastern Province (North) to Western Province (South), C. D. Wickramaratne from Padaviya Operations to Eastern Province (North), L. M. Dayananda Bandara, Northern Province (KKS) to the Mounted range and N. L. C. C. Perera Operations Wanni mto Welfare range Police HQ.
