Identifying a slight flaw within an athlete’s running, jumping and throwing motion as well as implementing newer methods of training and preparation can go a long way in strengthening an athlete’s position at an international event.

The eleventh edition of the South Asian Federation (SAF) games, being contested in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka from 29 January - 7 February this year, is one such international event in which Sri Lanka will be hoping to produce a solid if not commanding performance. Helping to achieve this fairly distant yet entirely realistic goal is reputed German coach and consultant, Ralph Mouchbahani.

Mouchbahani has worked as an athletics Head Coach and consultant for the national teams of his native Germany, Qatar, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Senegal as well as numerous clubs within Germany itself. He has constantly contributed to the world of sport by acting as a consultant to a number of countries and federations.

In the lead up to these SAF games Mouchbahani has worked closely with the local coaching staff to help bolster the performance levels of our national athletes through the use of a range of novel software and techniques.

One such system is the Movement Analysis software wherein as the name suggests an athlete’s movements are closely monitored and any necessary changes or improvements are suggested.
Speaking from the offices of Sri Lanka’s Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) Mouchbahani explains that sport has taken tremendously huge strides within the last twenty to thirty years and that the standard of international competition has progressed both in terms of performance and the density of competition. Therefore it is only sensible that training methods too, evolve with the times and effectively nurture athletes to face international competition.

“In Sri Lanka traditional coaching and training methods have been used for a long time and to their best effect but to bring the best out of an athlete you need to combine high performance with sports science.” revealed Mouchbahani.

Mr. Mouchbahani stresses that the progress and improvement an athlete may make using his techniques and software varies and depends mostly on their age, ability to adapt and maximum potential. However he says that there will definitely be notable differences in their performance levels if his methods are continued.
