Cultural feast in Galle

The Galle Season 2009 which kicks off today aims to celebrate and showcase the UNESCO World Heritage site’s many attractions with a feast of cultural activities and fun events.

With the main focus on the historic Galle Fort area and Galle’s seaside locations the festival aims to raise funds for the preservation of the Galle Library.

Among the fun events planned from today till the 31st are cultural pageants, street parades, a photography and architecture exhibition, beach carnivals and discos, an exhibitions of old crocks, fashion shows with the accent on period costumes, Army tattoo, Ruhunu sweet market, traditional spice market and a film festival. Each day’s events will start with religious activities.

There will also be a children’s amusement park. Planned as a community-led initiative by Agriculture Minister Hemakumar Nanayakkara, Galle Season 2009 will involve the residents of Galle Fort, hotels within the area and service organizations.
