Inspector General of Police, Mahinda Balasuriya, who visited Kandy this week, presented a five-year plan drawn up by him when he visited the Mahanayake of the Malwatta Chapter.

IGP Mahinda Balasuriya meets the Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera of Malwatte, above, and the Ven. Udugama Buddharakkitha Thera Mahanayake of Asgiriya, below.

The IGP told Venerable Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera that this was the first such comprehensive action plan ever designed for the Police Department. He said he had prepared the plan so that the Police Department could render the public a better service.

IGP Balasuriya said he would seek the Mahayake Thera’s advice in creating a good and efficient police service. The Venerable Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera blessed the IGP, saying the Police Department had its problems as much as any other government department, and that timely action would go a long way towards maintaining an efficient and clean police service. The IGP had earlier visited the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic). He also paid his respects to the Mahanayake of Asgiriya, the Venerable Udugama Buddharakkitha Thera.

IGP Balasuriya also said he would take all steps necessary to improve discipline in the police force.
Regarding police promotions, he said he would draw up a new scheme that would be fair to all, and that would mean better prospects for educated but low-ranking officers.

He said he will be launching a help centre on Tuesday for the public to lodge any complaints they may have by telephone or fax.

Accompanying the IGP were his wife and daughter, the Deputy Inspectors General Pujitha Jaysundera and J. Gammanpilla, and Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne, among other police officers.
