Urgent need to return to rule of law

Letter

Last week’s report on the “Urgent need for rule of law and reforms for good governance” in the Sunday Times FT by Wijeyadasa Rajapakse, MP, is a well researched article. It clearly reflects the current state of governance.

If the present style of governance is allowed to continue unchecked, it is mind boggling and scary to think of the future of our motherland. We know that every government manipulated the Constitution and manoeuvered the rule of law, for their, own benefit, at the expense of the present and future generations, and have caused irreparable damages to the country and the moral values. Now, matters have come to a climax. It is time for urgent action, to prevent further deterioration of sensible governance.

Hats off to Mr. Rajapakse for coming out with such a timely and beneficial article, while being a member of the ruling party. It clearly reflects his sincerity and love for the country. The article was a good eye opener. But who will bell the cat? The present government cannot be expected to act on it for obvious reasons. In my opinion, the only alternative is the UNP.

This is a golden opportunity for the main opposition UNP to take up the article in its entirety as the basis of their future manifesto. If the UNP is sincere in establishing a progressive and people-friendly future government, by putting country before self, then I am sure they will grab this issue immediately.

Until something constructive happens, newspapers like your’s should not let this issue just die down and fade off. We need more public awareness and concern, and welcome like-minded citizens to do whatever possible on their part to achieve the required results. Your newspaper can create a forum to muster support and momentum for some positive action by the concerned.
