S. Thomas’ won the boat race in style with a record timing of 3.02 at the 36th Royal-Thomian regatta held at the Rowing Club Last evening. In a very close encounter the Thomian ‘A’ 4 picked up at the last 300m of the race with a superb finish while the Royalists tailed behind even though they gave a good fight from the beginning.
Thomians winning the boat race at the Beira Lake yesterday. Thoras celebrate.

The lads from Mt. Lavinia dominated the waters of Beira Lake scoring a total of 40 points to Royalists weak reply of 12 points in total.

Victors secured both ‘A’ scull and ‘B’ scull with Royal reaching the finish line four seconds too late on both occasions. The trend set by the scullers of Thomians was carried forward by both ‘A’ and ‘B’ coxless pairs when both were won by Thomians with ‘A’ pair timing in 3.25 to Royals 3.38 and the Thomian B pair timing in at 3.26 to 3.31.

First race won by the Royalists for the day was the ‘B’ double scull when they rowed to victory in smooth long strokes which gave them a timing of 3.16 as a reply to Thomians’ 3.23.

Thomians regained the upper hand in the battle soon after by winning the ‘A’ double scull, leaving no time for the Royalists to even catch their breath. The ‘C’ four was yet again won by the Thomians with the Thomians maintaining a lead from the beginning but Royalist did the best they could to give the Thomians a good fight but lost 3.26 to 3.19.

The most exiting races of the evening were the ‘B’ four and the ‘A’ four where the Thomian superiority was clearly visible. From the start Royalists were leading but when they closed up to 500 meters they left their opponents and rowed a smooth clear finish with a timing of 3.06 to 3.15.

Highlight of the day was when the senior four took the waters. It looked as if the Royalists had a chance but soon all hopes left the Royal when the Thomian team taking the inside course took the lead picking up pace with long smooth strokes which pushed them to their victory over Royalists. The last 300 meters of the race was thrilling as the two opponents pushed forward with Royal fighting hard to save grace but ultimately lost to Thomians who rowed to victory with a timing of 3.02 to 3.06.
