Visit to boost Vietnam ties

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will make a three-day official visit to Vietnam beginning October 22. With just over two weeks to go for the visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has named Dr. Ivan Amerasinghe, a former chairman of the National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering as Sri Lanka’s new ambassador to Vietnam. The post has remained vacant for several months.

At present, Nihal Indragupta, Charge d’ Affairs in Vietnam is functioning as acting ambassador. In addition, the Foreign Ministry will dispatch Aruna Rajakaruna to serve as additional Charge d’ Affairs. It will be a short stint to cover the visit of President Rajapaksa.

Vietnam was one of the countries that strongly supported the Rajapaksa Government in its military campaign against Tiger guerrillas.
