Obtain a world class Engineering degree from SAITM

I am investing five hundred million rupees to establish the South Asian Institute of Technology and Management (SAITM) in order to produce educated men and women with character. I do not expect a return on investment but only an operational profit to run the institution, so that children who enter SAITM will have affordable fees to pay. This institution will be donated to the state in thirty years' time in return for what my family and I have got during our lifetime.

Dr. Neville Fernando,
MBBS (Ceylon)

My expectation is that the students who join SAITM will live up to high ideals. My intention is to recruit the best university professors and lecturers from Sri Lanka and abroad to teach students and make SAITM the best education institute in South Asia and the most sought after higher education institute. I consider education, examinations and certificates alone to be insufficient.

Therefore, I am establishing Sri Lanka's first 'Green Campus' where students will live and study in harmony with the environment where sustainable development is of high priority. Biogas, conservation of water by collecting rain water and recycling waste water will also be implemented. The landscaped area will attract birds and bees.

The motto of SAITM is 'Education with Character' and I earnestly request prospective students to take advantage of our excellent academic programmes and state-of-the-art campus facilities.

To cater to a long felt need in the field of Engineering education the Faculty of Engineering of South Asian Technology and Management (SAITM) offers Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand Engineering undergraduate courses for the first time in Sri Lanka.

AIT, being the premier independent postgraduate and research institute in Asia, realizing the potential technological advances envisaged in the 21st century (which is widely regarded as the one that belongs to Asia), has initiated three Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B Sc. Eng) undergraduate programmes for the first time in Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka with the view to cater to the massive demand for quality engineers worldwide as well as to promote post graduate research work at AIT itself. Professor N. Rajatheva, a senior academic at AIT visiting SAITM has indicated that their primary aim in introducing AIT courses here is to identify and promote future academics for AIT as postgraduate students from Sri Lanka in the past have excelled in every department at AIT.

ICT, Electronics and Mechatronics Engineering
For the three ICT group courses, i.e., ICT, Mechatronics and Electronics, the course curriculum are formulated and introduced by AIT while the laboratory facilities and infrastructure are to be provided by SAITM. The teaching staff will be a combination of senior academics from the state universities in Sri Lanka and from AIT as visiting faculty. These four year undergraduate courses will be conducted in two phases with the first two years at SAITM, Sri Lanka and the final two years at AIT, Thailand. Those who transfer to AIT for the final phase will be offered MSc and PhD scholarship opportunities depending on their academic performances while job fares are conducted by the career guidance unit of AIT every six months to promote young graduates to talent scouting multi-national designed for the information and communication, wireless technology and consumer electronics. Mechatronics Engineering programme will be a stepping stone to Aerospace Engineering, Space science and Robotics.

British Degree in Civil Engineering
SAITM also offers a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Civil Engineering in collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton, a highly reputed university in UK, which will lead to graduates getting the opportunity to be members of the Institution of Incorporated Engineers in UK.

This three year undergraduate course conducted by professors and senior lecturers from state universities as visiting lecturers will follow the curriculum of the UK University. Armed with a world class degree in Civil Engineering the Sri Lankan young hopefuls can now have a path opened for them to enter into one of the highest paid engineering professions in the world where civil engineers handle multi-billion dollar projects worldwide. Those who wish to transfer to UK will also get the opportunity to do so in the final year at a higher tuition fee.

Students who complete the B.Eng degree can obtain the graduate membership in the Institution of Incorporated Civil Engineers (UK) while those who complete an additional year will receive M.Eng degree with the eligibility for graduate membership in either the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) or Institution of Structural Engineers (UK) all world recognized professional bodies. SAITM is to be equipped with laboratories, lecture halls, library and other infrastructure on par with the collaborating university in order to maximize the learning and training opportunities available for them to turn out professionals of the highest calibre.

The students who have passed A Levels in any stream (Arts, Commerce, Science) irrespective of their field of study can commence studies leading to Engineering degree at SAITM on completion of the special Mathematics course approved by the partner universities.
