Wendt welcomes a triple gem of theatre

Three memorable productions of Sri Lankan theatre will go on the boards at 7 pm from August 28 to 30 at Lionel Wendt theatre, Colombo.

Organised by Jude Srimal, Henry Jayasena’s ‘Kuweni’ will be staged on August 28, multi awarded ‘Charandas’directed by ParakramaNiriella will be staged on August 29 and a collection of one act extraordinary plays ‘Sihina Rangahala’ (Theatre of Dreams) will be on August 30 at 7 pm.

The new production of award winning play at National Drama Festival in 1963, ‘Kuweni’ is directed by Samudra Jeewani Karunananda. The play was a milestone of Sri Lankan theatre which introduces a novel stylistic trend based on the great Greek tradition.

The original music of Award winner H. H. Bandra, will be directed in the new production by Gayanath Nakala Dahanayake.

“Charandas,”, the award winning play directed by Parakrama Niriella, will be staged at the Lionel Wendt Theatre - Colombo 7. on Saturday, August 29 at 7.00 p.m. for the first time after the winning streak at the National Drama Awards Festival 2006 in both Sinhala and Tamil Drama categories.

An adaptation of the Indian version “Charandas Chor” by Habib Tanvir, “Charandas” won nine awards including Best Play and Best Direction at the National Drama Festival of 2006.

‘Sihina Rangahala’ (Theatre of Dreams), a collection of short plays produced by award winning playwright Dhananjaya Karunarathne celebrates its first anniversary after a series of successful shows staged around the country.

The show will include ‘Valentine Enakun’ played by Chandani Seneviratne and SusithNishantha, “Chandrawathie Samage Rathriyak” played by Palitha Silva and Kawshalya Fernando, “Duwana un Dennek” played by Chamal Ranasinghe and Dimithu Chinthaka, “Oba Sapekshai” played Madani Malwaththage and Sanath Wimalasiri and “Last Bus Eke Kathawa” by Saumya Liyanage.

An extraordinary play that built a close relationship between the audience and the actor, “Last Bus Eke Kathawa” has become popular in the English theatre as well with its translation by Ruwanthi de Chickera and played by Gihan de Chickera and was also performed in a number of countries.
