Five stars ready to explode

When Kumar Senaratne of Ceylon Hotel School Graduates Association (CHSGA) requested the star entertainer, Rajiv Sebastian to propose a name for a musical fund raiser in 2003, Rajiv taking the five star hotel circuit into consideration was quick to bring in the concept ‘5 Star Explosion’ featuring Annesley, Sunil, Corrine, Ronnie and Rajiv.

Six years later, 5 Star Explosion is ready to explode on August 28 at the BMICH with noticeable changes featuring the cream of Sri Lankan Pop namely Annesley, Indrani (the remaining duo of the original pop trio), Mignonne (the legendary songstress who is remembered at every Sri Lankan wedding for her all time hit ‘Mangala Mohotha’), Sunil (the most popular Sri Lankan entertainer) and Rajiv (the young versatile entertainer cum showman).

Catching Mignonne live in action is going to be a rare opportunity for the Sri Lankan music loving public since she spends most of her time overseas with her children.

In fact after the recently concluded sell-out concert “Desmond & Dezmond”, there were many inquiries why Sunil was limited for just one duet with Dezmond Rodrigo and why Rajiv didn’t appear on stage at all. “Going by the concept, some misread it. Cos’ when you name Desmond and Dezmond, the main two performers could only be the two Desmonds’ and the rest could only join in duets” quipped Rajiv.

However, Sunil who is just four months away from celebrating his 40th Anniversary with the Gypsies and Rajiv, who is also four months away from celebrating his 20th Anniversary with Rajiv & the Clan, has decided to break the silence and appear for just once, before they lay their hands in their Anniversary celebrations next year.

Rajiv who is very much in control as presenter and music director of the star performers of the good old 60’s, 70’s and 80’s in show biz and recordings, is all out to throw in surprises at this event with Annesley and Indrani rehearsing to dish out their latest singles and duet along with their all time hits and the hilarious Sunil Perera gearing up to appear on stage in a vintage car flanked by top Sri Lankan models to join Rajiv in an exciting duet.

Mignonne who would stick to her own imitable style will entertain you with her evergreen hits ‘Mangala Mohotha’, ‘Jeevithe Vasanthaye’, ‘Ada Api Inne Vinodayen’ etc. Who could afford to miss Sunil’s arrival with a bunch of pretty lasses on stage in a vintage car? Who wouldn’t want to see Mignonne’s fiery return? Could anyone miss Annesley and Indrani with their latest and greatest hits? And who would want to miss the man with the deep voice, Rajiv Sebastian’s one and only performance for the year 2009.
