Chinese shuttlers will be in action in Lanka

The Asian Junior Badminton Continental Championship will be held on August 3 to 9 at the S. Thomas’ College Badminton court. “This is the first occasion that a Continental Championship has been awarded to Sri Lanka in the 50 year history of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association” said Prof. Ranjith De Silva(President – Sri Lanka Badminton Association).

There will be 13 countries participating and the tournament and will host the powerhouses of Badminton like China, Malaysia and Thailand. There will also be teams from India, Iran and Hong Kong who have produced junior champions in the recent past plus teams from Singapore, Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Bhutan and Iraq.

“The current Sri Lankan junior squad has the potential to cause some upsets and make a mark in world badminton in this championship.” Officials said and they further stated that the aim of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association is not only to promote badminton but to also promote Sri Lanka as a major tourism hot spot and as a must visit destination with the help of the Tourist Board.The official hotel for this event is the Mount Lavania Hotel and the SLBA will be assisted by Tharunayata Hetak in conducting the tournament.
