If lessons aren’t learnt wars will continue

By Dr. S. Terrence G. R. de Silva

The last war in our memory is not the last,
Many a war has been fought in the past,
And future wars are already cast,
With winners and losers in the game aghast.
‘Humanitarian crisis is what’s in existence’

Many dead among the losers, less among the winners,
Disabled in the midst of both losers and winners,
Those caught in the cross-fire in the same manner,
Only the fortunate escape, without getting hammered.

Mental instability in each and every corner,
Sick with no way to get relief sooner,
Starvation rampant in the whole arena,
Children crying while parents murmur.

The war is over, there is no siren,
The dead underground in eternal silence,
The disabled suffer without any assistance,
“Humanitarian crisis” is what is in existence.

If no one speaks for the dead and gone
And no one helps the disabled unarmed,
If the poor remain hungry and alarmed,
“All are losers, no winners” – that’s confirmed.

If from past errors we don’t learn lessons,
War will continue to show its presence;
“Under the same sun” – why this happens?
“Man is still primitive” – that's the essence.
