Youth killed in post-polls incident

An 18-year-old youth last night succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained during a clash that took place yesterday between UPFA supporters at Baddowita in Attitidya, just after the conclusion of the Western Provincial Council polls.

The victim, Chamila Pushpakumara, a past student of St. Mary’s College, Dehiwela, was at the scene when ballot boxes were being transferred from the Janandanaramaya Temple booth in Baddowita to the counting centre. The incident occurred at about 4.10 pm.

According to eyewitnesses, UPFA candidate R. Duminda Silva had arrived at the scene just minutes before the shooting took place. The clash involved supporters of rival UPFA candidates Nawzer Fowzie, Amal Silva and Keerthi Udawatta, among others, Kalubowila hospital director Dr. Anil Jaasinghe said the victim had suffered multiple gunshot injuries in his upper thigh.

Chamila was transferred to the National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
