Cool jazz from strumming maestro

Two of the UK’s contemporary stars team up in a jazz concert in Colombo to celebrate the British Council’s 60th anniversary in Sri Lanka.

Described as “Europe’s finest guitarist”, Grammy nominated UK jazz guitarist Martin Taylor will thrill Colombo audiences accompanied by jazz vocalist Alison Burns on February 22.

Alison Burns and Martin Taylor

Grammy nominee Martin Taylor’s inimitable style has seen him recognised as the world’s foremost exponent of solo jazz guitar playing. During a career spanning four decades, he has invented and developed a way of playing the guitar that is admired, and often imitated, by guitarists all over the world and collaborated with musicians from many different musical genres includingStephane Grappelli, George Harrison and Jamie Cullum.

Nominated for the Grammy for Best Country Instrumental “Together at Last” done with French violin legend Stephane Grappelli and Vasser Clements, Martin has won many awards for his music including ‘The British Jazz Award for Best Guitarist’ 10 times and was also awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to jazz music.

He has played concerts in Sri Lanka twice before. Alison Burns. From being the first female apprentice engineer in the famous Timex watch factory at the age of 16 (complete with curls and a full face of make up!) to being sacked from a bingo calling job, to the tragic circumstances which encouraged her to make a leap of faith into performing from a secure but unsatisfying job, Alison Burns has had an inspiring road to success. Her debut album, Kissing Bug, released in March 2007 became the first album by a Scottish jazz singer to reach the Jazz Top 10.

The concert next Sunday, February 22, is presented in partnership with Hilton Colombo and the Sunera Foundation, along with media partners Wijeya Newspapers and EFM and ETV.

The concert will be in the British Council garden starting at 7.00 p.m. Tickets priced at Rs.1250 (first 5 rows) and Rs.1000 are now on sale at British Council and Hilton Colombo from February 10.
