Ketheeswaran, epitome of “if there’s a will there’s a way”

Sixteen year old S. Ketheeswaran is a young man determined to sit the ’O’ level maths paper. Despite being trapped in an LTTE controlled area in the Wanni he took the bold step of crossing into a government controlled area on Friday in order to sit for the exam.

Ketheeswaeran made his way into an IDP camp in Vavyniya and with the intervention of the military managed to sit for the maths paper which was conducted at the examination centre for IDPs at Kalaimangal, Nelumkulam in Vavuniya.

Ketheesveran sat for his O/levels in December in his home town of Mullaithivu, but as the military campaign intensified, he was forced into areas controlled by the Tigers.

On Friday however he made his way out of the area determined to sit for the maths paper. He also carried with him the identity cards he needed to sit the exam.

Examination officials took the unprecedented step of opening a sealed packet of examination papers around half an hour prior to the commencement of the exam and photocopied the paper so as to give Ketheeswaran the chance to sit for the exam.
