Lasantha killing: No breakthrough yet

More than two weeks after the assassination of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, police are yet to arrest a suspect or hold anyone responsible for the killing despite their earlier claims that they had got a lead.

Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara told The Sunday Times that they had found vital evidence relating to the assassination and that the sleuths were likely to achieve a possible breakthrough in their investigation.

“We are looking for a few people who could give us vital information. We are first trying to put all the evidence together before anything. There are no suspects as yet.

We also have no clues regarding the motive. But our detectives are trailing on a lead based on certain information that the police had received,” he said.

He declined to share more information saying it could hamper investigations. The police had found four finger prints on the slain editor’s car and are trying to ascertain whether they belonged to the killers.
