Esther Williams speaks to Surangani Abeyratne who practises a hands-on healing system where a person's negativity can be removed by using cosmic energy

Reiki relief
On a trip to Kandy, Charmaine de Silva began throwing up repeatedly. When her usual tablets did not give her relief, Surangani, a Reiki practitioner friend who was travelling with her placed her hands on Charmaine's stomach and head for a few minutes. "I gradually felt relief and then felt different and refreshed in a way. No one could tell that I had been quite sick en-route," says Charmaine.

Chandima's belief that Reiki could heal was confirmed when one morning, she received a call from her daughter's school. Her daughter, Seshi had had an asthmatic attack. While she was getting ready to take her to the doctor, Surangani who happened to be at her home spent some time with her daughter. "I took Seshi to the doctor an hour later only to be told that there was no trace of a wheeze. It was a marvellous instantaneous recovery," says Chandima.
Success stories of healing through Reiki are told in the rest of the world more than in Sri Lanka, where this alternative therapy is only just becoming popular. In Sri Lanka it is relatively new. Believers feel that it is a natural, holistic method of treatment that involves total relaxation, stress release and self-treatment of mind, body and soul.

Surangani Abeyratne who was initiated into Reiki in India is one of the first Reiki masters in Sri Lanka and today is a Reiki Grandmaster. Thus she is allowed to initiate and induct Reiki masters. Besides healing her family and others who wish to be healed, Surangani energises their food and maintains a Reiki box into which written intentions are dropped. "When the box is energised, the intentions materialise," says the Grandmaster.

Surangani has also studied Seichem by which air, water and fire join earth energy to do the healing. Having conducted over 50 seminars in Reiki that give an introduction to the healing forces of the universe and how you can utilize them for your well being and that of others, Surangani now intends to start classes in Seichem in addition to Reiki.
Students are also taught the various Reiki symbols associated with various ailments that have been contributed by various gurus. These symbols are drawn on a person or air (for distance healing) with the permission of the patient to enhance the power of healing.

Derived from the Japanese word RE-Ki, meaning universal life force or energy, Reiki is one of the oldest forms of healing known to mankind dating back to Lemurian times over 100,000 years ago.

Today Reiki has made its presence felt in North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, India and Japan. There are Reiki centres, cafes and clubs in many places and even on the internet.

The clairvoyants of the New Age School of Thought believe that Reiki (that uses cosmic energy) is a contract between Mother Earth and God in order to heal Mother Earth and its various life forms.

It is further believed that the human body has seven psychic chakras or wheels, situated at the crown, forehead, throat, heart, bottom of sternum, under the naval and one at the base of the spine and these are gateways of energy and life in the physical body.

Each chakra is associated with glands and organs of the body that react and respond to the energy and vibration received from Reiki. They spin at a certain pace. For great holy men, these chakras are perfectly aligned and spin at a faster pace as they are free of negativity. This enables them to heal and perform miracles.

"Negative thoughts, words and deeds that are manifested through anger, hatred, jealousy, etc., are the cause of all ailments," explains Surangani. These negative thoughts block the chakras leading to a pain in the body or the beginning of a disease. Disease can also be brought about by Karma - you reap what you sow.

Louise L. Hay in her book 'You Can Heal Your Life' writes about negative mental thought patterns that cause most diseases. "For instance, criticism indulged long enough, will often lead to diseases such as arthritis. Anger turns into things that burn and infect the body. Resentment, long held, eats and festers away, and can ultimately lead to tumours and cancer. Guilt always seeks punishment and leads to pain. It is so much easier to release these negative thinking patterns from our minds when we are healthy, than to dig them out when we are in a state of panic, and under the threat of a surgeon's knife."

Reiki is a hands-on healing system whereby a practitioner keeps their hand on a person and removes their negativity using cosmic energy. It is simple to use, offering solutions to most known diseases.

Reiki principles deal with only the positive - "do not worry, do not anger, honour parents, teachers and elders, earn your living honestly and show gratitude to everything." It does not expect one to be spiritually inclined for it to work because Reiki is an unconditional healing energy and practitioners are only channels of this energy.

"Following these principles can change one's life," says Surangani, "as it makes you aware of your faults, think twice before acting, evolve spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally that leads you to become a better person with good health. It has nothing to do with religion," she asserts.

Reiki also deals with the aura, the invisible double of our physical body that exists around us, although the human eye cannot see its existence. This has seven layers corresponding to the seven colours of the rainbow and these are associated with the physical, emotional, mental and other aspects of the body. Through Reiki one can remove the negativity stuck in the aura.

Reiki can also be used to cure relationships, clear houses of negativity that comes from bad thoughts left by people and can protect you and your loved ones, even those living far away on a daily basis (distance healing).

In this modern day when

people are stressed out and doctors have no time, there is a definite need for Reiki for over a period you become a calmer, happier person, says Surangani.
