It was a big drag

119th Battle of the Blues

By Bernie Wijesekera

Cricketwise, the first two days in the three day 119th 'Battle of Blues', between Royal/S. Thomas' was rejuvenated in the last day, when batsmen from either side produced some entertaining fare to the final day, scoring 372 runs for the loss of 13 wickets at the SSC grounds.

S. Thomas' who were 29 for one (overnight) went on to rattle 232 for 7 dec., after being 136 for 3 at lunch setting Royal a target of 266 to be made in 47 overs.

Royal in the end made 169 for 6 in the allotted overs. The match ended in a draw but there were quite a number of individual performances in batting, with Thomian skipper Upeka Fernando cracking a stroke-filled 50 in 64 balls with six fours.

In the first innings Upeka Fernando scored 80 runs and thus becomes the first batsman to score five half centuries since he started playing in the big 'un.

The Thomians second innings was highlighted with a bright second wicket stand of 66 runs between opener Sidath Medonza, who plodded for over four hours in the first essay, but in this innings batted with some charm and aggression for his 42 (with six fours made in 122 balls). Janaka Siriwardena clubbed 37 runs (six fours in 62 balls. While middle-order Gihan Fernando made 32 runs (3 fours in 55 balls) to make merry against the mediocre bowling.

Tail ender Naren Ratwatte used the long handle to smash 26 runs in 15 balls (with 3 fours and a six) to boost the total.

The Royal first innings fielding was atrocious aided and abetted by a makeshift 'keeper helping S. Thomas' to a big first innings total of 307 for 6 dec. Even the Thomian fielding spilled vital catches. Fielding on either side had much to be desired.

Royal's young future prospect Jehan Mubarak in this big match reached a new milestone when he reached 47 in the first innings to total 1000 runs and performed a fine double when he had a match bag of five wickets to reap a rich haul of 50 wickets in school cricket.

Royal in their second innings run chase, lost an early wicket, Angelo Perera at 4. But Ruchira Jayasuriya and lanky Thushan Amerasuriya batting with composure put on 39 runs for the second wicket. But Jayasuriya on 19 going for a big hit was stumped by Kanaka when he was deceived by Suranaga Peiris.

Meanwhile Thushan Amerasuriya finding early touch stroked the ball beautifully bringing some excitement to Royal's avid fans.

Partnered by Ravi Peiris, he pushed the score along with some intelligent batting but left handed Amerasuriya's innings came to an end when he fell at 45 (with five fours, in 73 balls).

While fresher Ravi Peiris joined by all-rounder Mubarak added some pepper and salt to the batting. Mubarak's first four scoring shots included three effortless drives to the ropes.

But his impetuosity cost him his wicket when he was caught at deep mid-on for a spicy 25 with five fours, in 59 balls. But debutant Ravi Peiris who made 66 runs in the first innings was foolishly run out at 44 (with 3 fours) just six runs short of his fifty, after a mix-up with Umesh Gunewardena.

Had he made it, he could have been the first batsman in this encounter to have scored twin half centuries on debut. Gunawardena batting confidently was on 19, when stumps were drawn.

Nilanka Peiris was out at 99 in the Thomian first innings. He was the first batsman to be out at 99, in this encounter.

Tissera guides Bens To safety

7th encounter St Benedict's -D S Senanayake

By Marlon Fernandopulle

A resolute innings from Rally Tissera saved St Benedict's from certain defeat in their annual encounter against D S Senanayake which concluded at the R. Premadasa stadium yesterday.

Set 190 runs to win in 30 overs the Benedictines were in dire straits tottering at 73 for 8 when over anxious D S Senanayake players grabbed the stumps with the last ball still to be bowled not realizing that their team had a remote possibility of claiming the last two wickets in one ball (If a No ball was bowled that resulted in a run out, and the final ball also claimed a wicket)

Tidy bowling and excellent wicket keeping from Shashi Lafir coupled with some irresponsible batting from the Benedictines brought life to their seventh encounter which looked to be drifting to a draw despite three declarations.

Apart from a stubborn unbeaten 35 from 86 balls by Rally Tissera the rest of the Benedictine batsmen crumbled to the DSS bowlers.Opening bowlers Anjana Dhanasooriya (2/21) and D Perera (2/17) reduced the Benedictines to 34 for 4 and later spinner Namal Abeywickrema picked up two quick wickets as St Benedict's were starting at defeat in the 10th mandatory over. However Tissers stood firm as he held one end up frustrating his opponents with a dogged innings that guided his team to safety

Earlier in the day St Benedicts continued from their overnight 72 for three declared at 186 for 6 wickets ,thirty minutes before the lunch interval.Calvin Perera completed a stylish half century with 09 fours while Susith Silva hit an explosive 37 in 35 balls with the aid of 7 boundaries.

DSS who enjoyed a lead of 33 runs hit up 156 for 7 wickets before declaring. First innings centurion Malintha Gajanayake top scored with with a powerful 77 in just 70 balls.Benedictine skipper Dinesh de Silva was the pick of the bowlers claiming 4 for 44 with his off spinners.
