Use of second hand school textbooks to increase next year

The Education Ministry has issued instructions to schools to increase the use of second hand school textbooks in the coming year.

Accordingly the guidelines on collecting used textbooks to be redistributed and the relevant percentages are included in a recent circular issued by the Education Ministry.

In the circular, the Ministry has also said textbooks where pages have been torn, cut, or have been drawn or scribbled on should not be collected.

The use of second hand textbooks will be increased for classes above grade 6 and the relevant education authorities were instructed to collect 60 percent of the textbooks from these classes.

However, the Ministry had also specified that when textbooks were distributed or re-distributed to students, students should not receive only second hand textbooks but a mix of used and new textbooks.

It was learned that the measures had been taken on a directive of the Finance Ministry in view of the high printing cost.

The Finance Ministry circular also said the measures were part of an exercise to cultivate the habit of learning to re-use secondhand books among school children.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said 55 per cent of the printing had been handed over to the private sector and they had been instructed to complete the printing by February next year.  -DWI
