Dr. Prabath Ekanayane, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Peradeniya, is determined to have CCTV equipment installed at specific points in the Faculty’s premises for the safety of the undergraduates.

Student union members made an attempt to disrupt the installation of CCTV cameras this week, but administration officials intervened to get the installation going.

Dr. Prabath said the University cannot afford to keep the Faculty of Arts closed for good “due to the unhealthy attitude by a group of unhealthy students.”

Therefore the installation of the CCTV cameras would take place with the Faculty’s premises and also the canteen, which was where a recent clash had taken place between students who supported ragging in the university, and those who were against it.

A few years ago, some undergrads within the campus had objected towards the installation of the CCTV network and the project was halted.

However, owing to the recent ragging incidents and clashes between students, the Dean was concerned about the disruption of education activities within the campus.
