A teacher serving in the Kandy district has lodged a complaint at the Human Rights Commission Regional Office in Kandy, as she claims her salary payments have been stalled for two months.

It was learned that the Nuwara Eliya zonal education department has held back her salary payments for the months of September and October 2022 on the grounds that she had not received proper clearance from the previous school she worked for.

The teacher who was serving as an assistant teacher in Nuwara Eliya was granted an appointment to teacher grade 3 classes in October 2019.On inquiry it was learned that the Nuwara Eliya zonal education office had insisted that she give a clearance certificate from the last school she had worked at.

However the principal of the school she worked for previously had refused to give her a clearance letter and therefore the Nuwara Eliya zonal education office was insisting that she report back to the old school and continue working there.

The appointment absorbing her to the mainstream teaching sector was granted in October 2019 and for the last three years she had been reporting to the new school in Kandy, which was mentioned in her letter of appointment.

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the teacher had been wrongly penalised and was undergoing hardship without her salary payments.

Any transfer effected should be done by the Transfer Board and letters should be given in writing, CTU Secretary V. Indraselvan said. -CC
